Top policymakers in Washington and Beijing drew the blueprint for the new bilateral relationship, but the work of building it was left to a host of Americans and Chinese from all walks of life, who engaged in “people-to-people” exchanges. After two decades of estrangement and hostility caused by the Cold War, these people dramatically changed the nature of US-China relations. Americans reimagined China as a country of opportunities, irresistible because of its prodigious potential, while Chinese reinterpreted the United States as an agent of modernization, capable of enriching their country and rejuvenating their lives. Drawing on extensive research at two dozen archives in the United States and China, People’s Diplomacy redefines contemporary US-China relations as a creation of the American and Chinese people.

https://www.osaka-up.or.jp/book.php?isbn=978-4-87259-771-4

https://www.nippyo.co.jp/shop/magazines/latest/1.html

Katsuya Takii（Discussion Paper）

Ayaka Nakamura and Katsuya Takii “The Effect of Initial Job in Japanese Labor Market” OSIPP Discussion Paper, DP-2024-E-007, November 8, 2024　https://hdl.handle.net/11094/98402

Abstract: We investigate the effect of being a regular employee in a job which a worker takes immediately after graduation (the initial job), on subsequent job status. We construct an assignment model that can be estimated by the marginal treatment effect (MTE) framework; the model suggests that the region- and cohort-level unexpected shocks that influences the demand for full time-worker share is a valid instrument under some assumptions. Estimating the MTE, we find that the treatment effect of the initial job is heterogeneous among individuals: male workers who are less likely to obtain regular employment in the initial job enjoy benefits of stable employment; however, the regular initial job does not increase the probability of subsequent regular employment for male workers who are likely to obtain regular employment in the initial job.

[8,12
