Using panel data for 1,741 Japanese municipalities in 2009, 2014, 2016, and 2021, access is proxied by geodesic distance from each municipal centroid to the nearest municipality with a law office. Fixed-effects estimates show that closer access is associated with higher divorce rates. No significant association is found for suicide.
