【院生紹介】Bhavyanshi Sinhaさん（OSIPP博士後期課程）

今回は、博士後期課程1年のBhavyanshi Sinhaさん（以下、Bhavyaさん）にインタビューを行いました。Bhavyaさんはインド出身で、文部科学省の国費外国人留学生制度(以下、MEXT)の奨学生としてOSIPPに在学しています。
This time, I had an interview with Bhavyanshi Sinha, a first-year doctoral student. Bhavya is from India and is a MEXT scholarship recipient.
研究テーマと、そのテーマを選んだ理由を教えてください。
What is your current research topic, and what motivated you to choose it?
私は地域のサプライチェーン、とりわけアジアや途上国における事例に関心があります。現在は、為替レート制度がアフリカ域内貿易にどのような影響を与えるのかをテーマに研究しています。このテーマを選んだ理由は、（1）先進国を対象とした研究は蓄積がある一方で、途上国を扱う研究は相対的に少ないこと、（2）特にコロナ禍以降、途上国でもサプライチェーン上の課題が注目され、地域サプライチェーンへの関心が高まっていること、の2点です。そのため、本テーマは学術的にも実務的にも重要だと考えています。
また、こうした関心を持つきっかけとして、日本で高校留学をした際の経験が大きく影響しています。留学先の高校での社会科見学で日本の自動車メーカーを訪問し、輸入に関する政策について学ぶ機会がありました。この経験を通じて国際貿易に関心を持つようになり、現在の研究につながっています。
I am interested in regional supply chains, particularly those in Asia and developing countries. Currently, I am researching how exchange rate regimes affect intra-African trade. I chose this topic for two main reasons: (1) while there is a substantial body of research on advanced economies, relatively fewer studies focus on developing countries; and (2) especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain challenges in developing countries have drawn greater attention, increasing interest in regional supply chains. For these reasons, I believe this topic is important both academically and practically.
My interest in this area was shaped by my experience studying abroad in Japan during high school. As part of a school field trip, I visited a Japanese automobile manufacturer and had the opportunity to learn about its import policies. That experience sparked my interest in international trade and ultimately led to my current research.

なるほど。日本での留学経験があるのですね。OSIPPで博士課程を始められる前は、どのようなご経歴でしたか。
Could you tell me about your career path before you began your doctoral studies at OSIPP?
インドで経済学の学士号および修士号を取得した後、シンクタンクにて約2年間、リサーチアソシエイトとして勤務しました。専門は国際貿易で、南アジア域内貿易における制度的・構造的課題に焦点を当てた研究プロジェクトに従事しました。
実務を通じて研究への関心がさらに深まり、博士号取得を目指すようになりました。進学先を検討する中で、日本のMEXTの奨学金制度を知りました。加えて、高校時代に日本へ留学した経験があること、そして現在の指導教員である石瀬寛和先生の研究テーマが私の関心と近いことから、OSIPPへの進学を志望しました。
After earning my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics in India, I worked for about two years as a Research Associate at a think tank. My specialization is international trade, and I contributed to research projects that focused on institutional and structural challenges in intra–South Asian trade.
Through this professional experience, my interest in research deepened further, and I decided to pursue a PhD. While exploring potential graduate programs, I learned about Japan’s MEXT scholarship program. In addition, given my experience studying abroad in Japan during high school and the fact that my current supervisor, Professor Hirokazu Ishise, works on research topics closely aligned with my interests, I applied to OSIPP.
OSIPPでは新たに経済学の学位が取得できるようになりましたが、Bhavyaさんは国際公共政策と経済学のどちらの学位取得を目指していますか。理由と今後の計画も教えてください。
I heard you’re planning to pursue an Economics degree through OSIPP’s curriculum. Could you explain how you plan to do that, and why you chose this path?
私はOSIPPにて経済学の博士号取得を目指しています。研究生として在籍していた1年間（博士後期課程に進学する前の学修・準備期間）から博士後期課程1年目にかけて、コア科目と呼ばれる経済系の科目（OSIPP、経済学研究科）を履修し、必要な単位をいくつか修得しました。2年目以降は博士論文の研究に本格的に取り組む予定であり、この分野で活躍されている先生方からご指導やご助言をいただけることを楽しみにしています。
I am pursuing a PhD in Economics at OSIPP. From my time as a research student (a one-year period of study and preparation before entering the doctoral program) through the first year of the doctoral program, I completed core courses (OSIPP and Graduate School of Economics) and earned several required credits. From the second year onward, I plan to focus fully on my doctoral dissertation, and I look forward to receiving guidance and valuable feedback from the distinguished faculty in this field.

OSIPPを卒業してからのキャリアのビジョンはありますか。
Do you have a clear picture of your career after graduating from OSIPP? If so, could you describe it?
進路についてはまだ検討中ですが、世界銀行で研究者（エコノミスト）として国際貿易と国際金融のプロジェクトに従事したいと思います。
I am still in the process of considering my future career path, but I hope to work at the World Bank as a researcher (economist), contributing to projects in international trade and international finance.
Bhavyaさんは、幅広い分野の本を読むことが重要だと考えています。皆さんにおすすめしたい本を教えてください。
Bhavya believes that it is important to read books across a wide range of fields. Are there any books you would recommend?
私のおすすめの本は Michio KakuさんのThe Future of the Mindです。この本はとても興味深く、人間の脳に関して現在どのような研究が行われているのかを紹介しながら、それを非常に分かりやすく、かつ楽しく説明しています。
My recommended book is The Future of the Mind by Michio Kaku. It’s a fascinating book that introduces the latest research on the human brain and explains it in a way that is both very easy to understand and enjoyable to read.
