The Special Winter Program on Society and International Relations of Contemporary Japan was held from January 6 to January 10 at OSIPP/ Osaka University.  OSIPP hosted 20 students from Kyung Hee University, a partner school with an inter-departmental exchange agreement with Osaka University.

On the first day, Dean Hiroo Nakajima welcomed the students in Korean and provided brief information about the programs and activities of OSIPP. After the welcome remarks, Associate Professor Maekawa Wakako delivered a lecture on “Japan’s Approach to Peacebuilding”.

The next day, Professor Michiya Kawamura and Specially Appointed Professor Haruko Satoh gave lectures on multicultural policies in Japan and Japan’s state identity, respectively. The thought-provoking lectures encouraged the students to ask questions during and after the sessions.

On the third day, Associate Professor Kento Nisugi and Associate Professor Hinako Takata discussed contemporary law issues in East Asia. Associate Professor Nisugi lectured about foreign direct investment and trade issues, while Associate Professor Takata focused on human rights protection in the region. After Associate Professor Takata’s lecture, the students were divided into four groups to discuss whether Asia’s human rights protection system is desirable. The representatives from the four breakout groups made brief presentations based on their discussions with fellow students.

On the fourth day, Professor Takuro Yamashita and Professor Masako Ikefuji from the Economics department at OSIPP delivered lectures on “Introduction to the Economic Theory of Institution Design” and “Environmental Policies in Japan.”

On the last day, Associate Professor Sayumi Miyano discussed “the International Political Economy in East Asia”. The guide questions, “Can economic integration prevent conflicts in Asia?” and “What are the pros and cons of bilateral foreign trade agreements?” helped the students articulate their insights and relate their ideas to what they had learned in the past five days.

Following the lecture, the certificates were awarded to the students, presided by Dean Hiroo Nakajima and faciliated by Professor Michiya Kawamura. The 2025 OSIPP Special Winter Program has been a fruitful learning event for Kyung Hee University students to discuss East Asia’s contemporary societal, political, legal, and economic issues.
