Title: ”Do the good intentions backfire: The effect of access to legal services on divorce and suicide”

Abstract: This study exams whether better access to legal services is associated with family dissolution and health. Using panel data for 1,741 Japanese municipalities in 2009, 2014, 2016, and 2021, access is proxied by geodesic distance from each municipal centroid to the nearest municipality with a law office. Fixed-effects estimates show that closer access is associated with higher divorce rates. No significant association is found for suicide. Closer access predicts lower all-cause mortality, with reductions in heart-disease deaths for men and cerebrovascular deaths for women, suggesting legal access may ease marital exits yet mitigate health risks.
